Violin Repair Program - Instructors

• Ute Zahn (Taught at MSC Southeast 2012-2017)

Ute Zahn was born into a musical family in Germany. At age eighteen, she built her first violin, then trained as a violin maker and repairer at the Newark School of Violin Making and Repair in Newark, U.K, from which she graduated in 1987. She worked for three years at the Beverley Music Centre in Beverley, U.K. as a restorer, gaining a solid grounding in instrument set-up and repair. This was followed by two years in the workshop of Sandra Wagstaff Violins in Hong Kong. She then spent seven years making and restoring violins in Hong Kong and freelancing as a cellist. In 1999, she was invited to join the staff at Claire Givens's workshop in Minneapolis, which afforded her the opportunity to expand her experience with sound adjustment and the restoration of fine instruments. In 2003 she moved to House of Note, where she worked for almost ten years.
